Lysan is the Old English root for ‘Redeem’ or ‘Set Free’. We believe this fits us well as a church. Redeem is what God has done for us in Jesus. He has given the life of Jesus in exchange for our lives, in order to redeem us from the final curse of death that results from our rebellion against God (commonly called ‘sin’). In redeeming us, God also sets us free from present bondage to sin, enabling us to love him and those around us. We are set free not to live as we please, but to live under the rule of Jesus by his Holy Spirit – this is true freedom. We are redeemed to belong to Jesus, and set free to love the world around us, so we say that Lysan is a church that Belongs to Jesus and Loves Camden.
Belongs to Jesus: The good news of God’s redemption in Jesus defines us as a church. Jesus’ death and resurrection have won for us forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God – though we used to be God’s enemies, we now belong to God as part of his people.
Loves Camden: God is on the move in the world – he loves this city and its people. Because we belong to God, we join him in loving our little bit of London – Camden Town. God has made everything new in Jesus, and we want to help see that ‘newness’ come true for Camden. |
